Thank you for your Service!

When we think of people who serve in the military, we likely think of people on “the front lines”. But as with any large organization, there are many who have careers in other parts of the organization serving in critical functions. One of things I enjoy is learning about other people’s work/career, and volunteering for the Portraits for Patriots program affords me an opportunity to meet and learn about people’s careers serving our country. Portraits for Patriots is a non-profit organization with volunteer headshot photographers across the US, providing complementary headshots to transitioning military service members.

After 23+ years serving our country in the Marine Corps in policy and strategy, having been stationed in DC, VA, NC, CA as well as Japan, Iraq, Afghanistan, Dave is transitioning to civilian life (he also had a brief stint as an advisor/conduit in Saudi Arabia during his transition). He’s had significant experience in operational, contingency, and crisis planning along with leading teams dealing with crises (Covid, Typhoon in the Philippines).

I’ve never served in the military, but can appreciate some of the challenges vets face when transitioning, particularly for those who have served for most of their lives. Things many of take for granted, like finding an apartment, getting health insurance, and most importantly, looking for a job may be new experiences for many of these vets.  Over the years the government has recognized some of these challenges and provide transition programs to educate and provide assistance to those transitioning.

And fortunately many businesses make it a point to try to hire vets – not only is it the right thing to do, they bring a wealth of experience and expertise that can translate successfully into the civilian workplace.

Dave, thank you for your service, and best of success in your future endeavors. Any company would be lucky to have you on board!
